What behaviours does Transgender and non-binary domestic abuse involve?

Domestic abuse that is Trans and non-binary specific doesn’t tend to happen in isolation.
It’s often part of a pattern of behaviour intended to dominate and control. It can incorporate physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse and sexual abuse. If you’ve ever had your trans status used as an insult, had your identity criticised or been told you were over-reacting to threatening behaviour, it’s possible you’ve experienced domestic abuse.

Some examples of Transgender and non-binary domestic abuse are:

  • Being deliberately misgendered (wrong pronouns; “dead naming”)

  • Being ‘outed’ (or threatened to be outed) as trans

  • Being forced to present in the wrong gender

  • Being critiqued/shamed for expressing your gender

  • Being prevented from/shamed for expressing your gender

  • Having gendered body parts ridiculed or scrutinised

  • Being isolated from trans/LGBT+ friends or spaces

  • Having hormones taken away as punishment or as a means of coercion

Patterns of domestic abuse can be similar in heterosexual and same sex relationships, but when abuse happens within the trans+ community, there are several additional behaviours to consider too.
