Staff Spotlight – New Member spotlight – Family Practitioner Mehvish

Last month saw us welcome a fabulous new member to the team; Mehvish as a Family Practioner. Mehvish is a graduate in Early Years and Psychology with a passion for working with children and their families. She also has a Master’s Degree in Childcare Law and Practice.

What made you want to work with MY CWA?

I had looked at all sorts of different jobs in and around working with children, in fact I had wanted to work as a teacher at one point, and then realised that where I really had a passion was when I work with and help influence families as a whole. This can often mean that both academically and holistically children will thrive and do better. The work that My CWA do helps achieve this – placing the wellbeing of children at the forefront; their ethos represents exactly what I want and whilst being a feminist organisation there is still a clear acknowledgment of men too.

Since joining the team, how did you find your induction and have you had some training?

To be honest when I was told that there was an induction, I did have thoughts it may be a little tedious and boring (as they often can be when you just want to get on with your new job!), but I could not have been more wrong.

It was far from being boring!  I did courses in Domestic Abuse, Trauma and Suicide and feel so well equipped from them. They were online, but still so interactive meaning that you still felt like you had a voice during the training.

I really feel like they built foundations for me to feel confident in my role, I really feel like I can get out there and make a difference!

What does a day look like for you as a Family Practitioner?

I am only 5 weeks in but already it is clearly a role where you have autonomy but also are completely part of the wider team. I start each day going through my emails, ensuring that priority needs are met and look at the cases I am working on. I might call the partner of the person I am working closely with to develop a relationship and build confidence with them too, as this is an all family service and it is important that every member is involved in helping find solutions.

I work really closely with all of the teams and their programmes, and if there have been any incidents I need updating on or I need to update the rest of the team I do this. This can help us plan what is needed. Part of the 360 vision in ensuring we are able to offer the services we do are aided by the weekly supervision sessions where we all share what has been happening with our cases. This really helps me to understand how everything works together and helps the team gel too as well as being an integral part of how we run things at My CWA.  I like to think that we may be a small team that makes a big impact!

How do you see yourself progressing in the role?

As the role progresses I hope to make level 2 Family Practitioner and work with the wider family, making sure everyone is safe. I already really feel like I am building the positive foundations for a great career in helping children and their families.

Finally would you recommend applying to My CWA for a career in charity care?

Absolutely yes! From the very start I have felt really supported and no day is the same, I feel engaged and educated and can’t wait to keep learning.
